    The use of gears in aircraft engines is an emerging technology being actively pursued by all the major engine manufacturers to improve fuel economy and thrust. The primary technical barrier is the structural integrity of the gears from vibration-induced fatigue. Aerospace gears experience unique vibration phenomena because they operate at high speeds and, in order to reduce weight, are thin-walled and elastically deformable. As a result, resonance, nonlinearity, and high-speed gyroscopic effects are important. Conventional finite element methods are unsuitable for dynamic analyses in these conditions. This talk describes two computational methods to allow fast, accurate dynamic analysis of aerospace gears. One method is a hybrid analytical-computational approach that draws on static finite element analyses in the numerical integration of an analytical model. The second approach is a harmonic finite element formulation that takes advantage of gear axisymmetry. Both methods are orders of magnitude faster than existing tools that are too slow to be realistically used. The two methods offer complementary advantages that, taken together, provide accurate calculation of natural frequencies, vibration modes, dynamic response, and dynamic stresses even in the presence of strong nonlinearity from the tooth contact and contact loss.

主讲人简介:

    Prof. Parker is the L. S. Randolph Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Virginia Tech and Professor at Chongqing University. Previously he was a University Distinguished Professor and the Executive Dean at the University of Michigan-Shanghai Jiao Tong University Joint Institute. He received M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California, Berkeley.

    Prof. Parker is a Fellow of ASME and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He received the 2015 ASME N. O. Myklestad Award for “major innovation in vibration research and engineering.” He has received the US Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, the National Science Foundation CAREER, and the US Army Young Investigator Awards, as well as the ASME Gustus Larson Award, Ford Chief Engineer Award, French government Poste Rouge Award, SAE Ralph Teetor Educational Award, and ASEE’s Global Engineering Educator and Outstanding Faculty Awards.

    Prof. Parker’s research examines the vibration and stability of high-speed mechanical systems. One focus has been gear vibration. He has also investigated the vibration of axially moving materials, cyclically symmetric systems, centrifugal pendulum vibration absorbers, materials, disk-spindle systems, and the hydrodynamics of ocean wave energy harvesting devices. He has consulted for several companies internationally where analyses d on his research have solved problems in the automotive, helicopter, wind turbine, and aircraft engine industries.
